Custom Rugs & Runners: Personalising Your Hebden Bridge Home

In our Hebden Bridge workshop, we craft custom rugs and runners tailored to your needs. Whether it’s a unique size, a special shape, or using a carpet you love, custom pieces add a personal touch to your decor. Let’s look at how bespoke rugs and runners can elevate your home.

Why Go Custom?

Standard rug sizes don’t always cut it. Maybe you have an awkwardly shaped room, an extra-large space, or you want a rug that fits exactly under your dining table with all chairs on it (no more half-on, half-off). Custom rugs solve this by being made to the dimensions you specify, so they fit perfectly. In the many quirky layouts of Hebden Bridge homes, think attic rooms with sloping ceilings, or open-plan living/dining areas in converted mills… a bespoke rug can delineate spaces or fill nooks that store-bought rugs can’t.

Another reason to go custom is design freedom. You get to choose the carpet material, colour, pattern, and edging, essentially designing a one-of-a-kind piece. It’s like commissioning art for your floor! For instance, you might adore a certain carpet we have for wall-to-wall fitting, but you only want an area rug of it in your lounge. We can make that happen, any broadloom carpet can be turned into a rug or runner. Our team literally cuts the carpet to size and expertly binds the edges so it looks like a finished product from a mill.

Made-to-Measure Rugs

Made-to-Measure Rugs

The process starts with measuring your space. Let’s say you want a rug for the living room. You decide if you want all furniture on it or just the coffee table, etc. We often visit customers’ homes in Hebden Bridge to help measure and chalk out different rug size options sometimes what you initially think isn’t what ends up best once you see the outline on the floor. Once size is confirmed, the fun part is picking the carpet.

We have a huge range of carpets in our showroom, plush wool twists, chunky natural weaves, soft saxonies, patterned Wiltons, any of these can be rug material. Want a giant round rug for your reading corner? We can cut a circle from carpet and bind it (we’ve done everything from circles to octagons to runners with L-shapes for weird hallways!). If you have a mid-century modern aesthetic, maybe you’ll choose a bold geometric pattern carpet and have it made into a custom rug for under your teak coffee table. If you’re aiming for Scandi-chic, a simple off-white wool loop carpet can become a minimalist rug with a clean binding.

One delightful project we did was for a Hebden Bridge artist’s studio, she had a small alcove where she meditates and wanted a pebble-shaped rug resembling river stones. We cut a curvy, organic shape out of a grey textured carpet and finished the edge. It looked fantastic and fit her space to a tee. The possibilities with shape are near endless when you go bespoke.

After cutting, we apply professional edge binding. This could be a matching tape around the edge for a nearly invisible finish, or a contrasting fabric border if it’s part of the design. For example, many customers like adding a border to their rugs: a black border on a beige rug for a modern frame, or a leather border on a sisal rug for a sleek accent. We’ve even done double borders (a thin pop of colour along the edge of a wider neutral border, very high-end look). Our workshop team has the tools and skills to ensure corners are crisp, curves are smooth, and the binding is durable.

Stair Running - customer made in Hebden

Custom Stair Runners

Personalising doesn’t stop at rugs; bespoke stair runners are a popular request too. Maybe you want a runner that matches a rug in the adjacent hall for a cohesive look. Or you fell in love with a patterned carpet but only want it on the stairs as a runner with a coordinating plain carpet elsewhere. We can cut the exact width runner you need (say you want more wood exposed on the sides than standard, no problem) and finish it beautifully. You can mix and match: choose a striped carpet for the runner and we’ll bind it with a complementary coloured edge to make it unique.

We also create runners for hallways, those long, narrow rugs that often lead from the front door inward. If your hallway isn’t a standard length, a custom runner ensures it looks intentional and covers the distance without awkward gaps. For instance, one Mytholmroyd family had an extra long hallway due to an extension, we made a 7-metre bespoke runner to stretch from the door to the kitchen threshold in one go, using a durable tartan pattern carpet bound in dark green.

Custom means you’re not limited by pre-made lengths; want a runner that goes the whole length of your landing? You got it. We’ll measure around newel posts, cut precise angles for winder stairs, etc., delivering a tailor-made result.

Creative Touches

One great thing about being in control of design is you can add creative touches. We’ve had customers request monograms or logos in their rugs (e.g., a family crest by the foyer, we achieved this by computer cutting two carpets and inlaying one into the other). Others have done rug borders in contrasting carpets instead of fabric, like a leopard print carpet border around a black rug, for a glam look. And because we do the work here, we ensure patterns line up and everything is seamlessly attached.

Consider also the pile direction for cut carpets. We can orient the carpet in a certain way if you want a sheen or stripe to run a particular direction in the room. It’s these little details that custom work allows.

If sustainability or using what you have matters to you, we can even turn your leftover carpet pieces into rugs. Have remnants from when your house was carpeted? Don’t toss them, we can bind them into doormats, runners for the utility room, or rugs for bedrooms. It’s a great way to reduce waste and get more use out of the material you’ve paid for.

Showcasing Local Craftsmanship

Our Hebden Bridge rug and runner workshop is something we’re proud of, not every flooring shop offers on-site custom crafting. When you get a bespoke rug from us, you’re supporting local artisanship. We’ve been told our custom rugs feel extra special because they’re made right here by our family team, often literally upstairs from the showroom floor. It’s a personal process, we keep you updated, and you can even pop in to see your rug being finished if you like that sort of thing!

The turnaround for custom pieces is generally quite quick too since we’re not ordering a finished product from elsewhere, we just need the chosen carpet in stock. If it’s in our inventory or quick to get, we can sometimes craft a rug in just a week or two. Perfect for when you’re sprucing up the home before a big event or holiday guests and need that finishing touch.

One-of-a-Kind Home Decor

Ultimately, a custom rug or runner is about making your home yours. It’s those bespoke details that truly set a space apart. Maybe it’s that extra-large rug where all your friends gather around the fireplace without touching cold floor, or the stair runner with a quirky pattern that makes you smile every time you go upstairs. These items aren’t just functional; they carry a story, you chose them, designed them, and we crafted them just for you.

Natural Flooring

I wanted an eco-friendly flooring option and fell in love with the sisal and seagrass selections at Connaught. The team was incredibly helpful in explaining the pros and cons of each. I ended up choosing a herringbone-weave sisal for my home office and a seagrass carpet for our dining area. The installation was “flawless” lol… you can see the quality in every edge and join. The natural texture has totally elevated the look of our rooms, and I get so many compliments on it.
